About us

Evergreen” as the resort is referred to, is the best locally owned and operated accommodation on Tanna and is a role model for all others in Vanuatu.

Sam, Merian, Peter and the crew know the island like no other; excellent touring vehicles do the daily excursions to all the top spots. Peter's father, Chief Ton, was the first guide to the volcano learning his skills from the pioneer, Bob Paul who started the first airline in Vanuatu. The bungalows are set under the protection and shade of a giant banyan tree – assisted with a gentle ocean breeze. Views over the ocean and endless pristine coral reef 100 metres in front of the bungalows. It is truly a snorkeller’s paradise.

Evergreen obtains its electricity from generator which operates at least 8 hours per day. Tanna Evergreen Resort & Tours is the ongoing dream of Sam and Meriane Numake. It all started in 1995, Sam, the son of Chief Tom Numake Tuan was at the time driving tours throughout Tanna Island. The couple could see the new airport being built and acquired the land for their venture.

“We saw the potential of establishing accommodation close to the airport and in 1996, commenced building; it took 2 years to establish a small restaurant, 4 modest shared facilities bungalows and one touring vehicle. Those days are long gone; we are now the largest 100% owned and operated Ni-Vanuatu Bungalow on Tanna Island and have won the Best Bungalow of the Year (2006) at the Vanuatu Hospitality Awards.

Eco-tourism is natural to us, as protecting our land, sea and culture is essential to surviving on this island. But, as importantly, we want to encourage other Ni-Vanuatu’s to work for their own and their country’s economic independence.

You could say, self reliance is our greatest motivation and take this opportunity to thank the thousands of people we have had the pleasure of looking after in their discover of our island.”
